Academics

A large school setting can be intimidating and often lead to numerous placement failures.  Schrom Boy's Home interrupts failure by assisting students with understanding and obtaining the need for academic achievement.  Through our intimate family-style environment students experience a positive environment that focuses on and highlights daily achievements of our students.  Success breeds success!

Academics play an important role in adolescents' self-esteem, development of self-efficacy and future success.  At Hawk's Landing, boy's receive ongoing support as they continue their education as outlined in their Individual Plan.

Most high school age boy's attend  Bonners Ferry High School  (BFHS), which was built in 2004 and has an average enrollment of 500 students.  There are many benefits to a smaller school environment, including better communication with teachers and counselors and increased participation in sports and activities that boy's might have avoided in much larger schools.  The high school provides access to dual enrollment classes and online courses through the local North Idaho College branch.  Special education services are available for those who qualify.

Academic success plays a significant role in the path toward family reunification. Academics for each student are based on their specific needs, with options for attending classes at the local high school, extracurricular activities, part-time employment, hobbies/interests.

Self-confidence grows as our students achieve academically.  We work directly with Bonners Ferry High School teachers and administrators in providing for the needs of our students.  Special education services are available to our students who have an existing 504 Plan or an I.E.P.  or require those services.  In addition, we offer tutorial services for students needing extra support.  North Idaho College is available to those students who want to get a chance to experience higher education expectations.

Life Long Learning

Success is enhanced through life-long learning activities, which may include music lessons, equine therapy, community service, field trips, 12-step meetings, sports, and outdoor adventure.  Independent living skills are practiced daily and include effective communication, laundry, cooking, chores, interpersonal relationship development, career exploration, financial management, and post-secondary planning.

Equine Therapy

Learning to safely and effectively work around an animal weighing 1000 pounds or more requires patience, trust, awareness, compassion, responsibility and self-confidence.  At Schrom Boy's Home, the boys, participate in weekly therapeutic horseback riding in and out of an arena.  The boys learn about horses and practice horsemanship, with the added benefits of increasing awareness of their emotional states, improving their verbal and non-verbal communication skills, recognizing their dsyfuntional patterns of behavior and practicing new coping mechanisms.
